Egypt Forms Permanent Committee to Monitor Steel Billet Supply and Prices

The committee aims to resolve raw material procurement problems

Egypt has established a permanent committee to monitor the availability and prices of steel billets. The government’s main goal is to resolve the raw material procurement problems faced by re-rolling mills and to ensure the stability of domestic production. This was reported by SteelOrbis, citing a joint statement by the country’s Ministry of Industry and Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade.

The new body includes representatives of the ministries of industry, investment, foreign trade and supply, as well as the Egyptian Competition Authority. The committee will assess the availability of steel billets at competitive prices and facilitate the uninterrupted operation of supply chains.

Business representatives are to provide data and documents to assess the market situation. Minister Farid noted that complaints will be verified on the basis of company reports and the results of on-site inspections. Particular attention will be paid to supplying plants with the required volumes, grades and specifications of raw materials to operate at design capacity.

These measures continue the implementation of Decision No. 121 of 2026, which introduced definitive safeguard measures on billet imports. Officials stressed the need to balance the interests of all producers, protect investments and support national production.

Minister Hashem announced the granting of new licenses for billet production with flexible pricing and payment terms. This is expected to encourage companies to invest in their own melting capacities, expand domestic production and reduce dependence on imports.

The ministers also noted external economic risks, in particular possible restrictions on scrap exports from the European Union, confirming their intention to provide the industry with raw materials and increase its competitiveness.
