Steel Billets: Introduction, Production, Characteristics & Widespread Applications

Steel billet is a product obtained by casting molten steel produced in a steel-making furnace. As an important raw material in the steel industry, it is widely used in many fields. The following is a detailed description of the introduction and application of steel billets:

Introduction to billet

Definition:

Steel billet is a semi-finished product obtained after casting molten steel and is mainly used for the production of steel.

Production process:

The production of steel billets is mainly achieved through three process methods: one is to directly cast molten steel into steel billets through the continuous casting equipment of the steelmaking system; the other is to roll the steel ingots or continuous cast billets produced by the steelmaking system through the steel rolling system. The first is semi-finished steel products processed by forging equipment; the third is semi-finished products processed by forging equipment from steel ingots produced by the steel-making system. Among them, continuous casting is the mainstream production process, and the mold casting process has been basically eliminated.

Classification:

According to the manufacturing process: it is mainly divided into mold casting billet and continuous casting billet.

According to appearance: mainly divided into slab and billet. The ratio of the cross-section width and height of the slab is large, and it is mainly used for rolling plates; the width and height of the square billet are equal or have little difference, and it is mainly used for rolling steel sections and wire rods.

Characteristics:

Steel billet has the characteristics of high strength, high hardness and high toughness, and is the basic material for making steel products.

Billet Application

As a raw material in the steel industry, steel billet is widely used, mainly including but not limited to the following fields:

1. Construction field: Steel billets are widely used in building structures, such as steel bars, steel beams, steel plates, etc. Steel has the characteristics of high strength, lightweight, and easy processing, so it is often used to replace traditional brick-concrete structures to improve the safety and durability of buildings.

2. Machinery manufacturing field: Steel billet is also one of the important materials for manufacturing machinery and equipment. In the machinery manufacturing process, steel billets need to be processed into different shapes of steel, such as round steel, flat steel, angle steel, etc., which are used to manufacture bearings, gears, machine parts, etc.

3. Automobile industry: Safety, lightweight and energy saving are the three major goals in automobile manufacturing. Steel billet is one of the important raw materials for automobile steel, and its processed steel products are widely used in the manufacturing of automobile bodies, chassis, engines and other components.

4. Ship manufacturing: Steel billets are also used in ship manufacturing, such as hulls, ship plates, etc. Steel's corrosion resistance, high strength and ease of processing make it an ideal material for shipbuilding.

In addition, steel billets are also used in other fields such as energy and transportation. With the continuous advancement of industrialization and the continued development of the global economy, the market demand for steel billets has remained at a high level. At the same time, with the continuous advancement of technology and the improvement of environmental protection requirements, the production process and quality control of steel billets will continue to be improved and upgraded.
